Portuguese Citizenship
Portuguese citizenship through naturalisation can be requested after 5 years of legal residence in the country. The countdown begins from the date of your first residence permit application
Required documents:
Birth certificate with an apostille, translated into Portuguese and notarised
Certificate of Portuguese language proficiency at level A2. To obtain it, you must either pass the CAPLE exam or complete certified Portuguese courses. The exam includes a grammar test, essays, listening, and dialogues
Criminal record certificate from your country of origin. This document is only valid for three months, so it should be requested close to the submission date
An application form including your contact details, parents' names, and residential address, where the citizenship approval letter will be sent
Valid residency permit
Documents can be submitted in person at the IRN, sent by CTT mail, or through a lawyer online. Online submission significantly reduces processing time, allowing your application to move through the first four stages faster than traditional paper submission
